Drupal Home Page Shows Random Characters

I have been occassionally running into some strange errors on several of my Drupal websites recently (running on both Ubuntu and Windows Apache). Basically, the problem is that sometimes when I go to a site like http://GreenColoredGlasses.ca I get a lot of random characters (I have had a browser offer to translate it from Greek, but the translation looked just as bad). The really weird part is that if I ad a node path like http://GreenColoredGlasses.ca/index.php then everything works fine and it is only on the default page. At least this means that I can log in. I have found that doing an update clears the issue up for a while.

The article includes a patch, so hopefully that fixes it.
